Are you like me? Do you dream about mermaids and their sparkling underwater palaces?
I like to think about mermaids with long, shiny hair, sparkly tails of every color of the rainbow, long eyelashes, and laughter. I bet mermaids are always having fun!
Mermaids can swim fast enough to follow passing ships. They can watch humans without them knowing and giggle with their mermaid friends as they pick out the most handsome boys. Sometimes they come to the rescue and save someone who is drowning. They can explore shipwrecks at the bottom of the sea. They zip around playing hide-and-seek with their fish friends and sing beautiful, enchanted songs.
I think they have a lot of fun, but I think that sometimes they watch us humans and think we have all the fun.
I know a story about a baby mermaid who watched as a little girl on shore played with a doll. The little mermaid was fascinated. Oh, that doll looked so amazing! As soon as the little girl grew tired of her doll and wandered off to pick up seashells and sand dollars, the baby mermaid swam closer and closer, inching her way to the doll. Would the little girl see her? She hoped not! She would get in so much trouble! But she wanted to play with the doll so much.
From the white froth where the waves would break, the baby mermaid watched for her chance. There! She rode in the next wave, snatched the doll, and flipped her tail as she dove quickly out of sight. She happily went back home to play with her prize. The baby’s mother was tucking her baby into bed one night when she made a horrifying discovery. Her darling daughter was cuddling a human’s doll! She scolded her little mermaid and made her promise that she would return the doll to its true owner the next day. The beautiful mermaid mother put a lustrous pearl necklace around the doll’s neck as a gift of apology to the human. Can you imagine how excited the little girl would be to get her doll back along with such valuable pearls?
I know another story about a poor fisherman. He had spent a difficult day in stormy waters. His boat was tossed up and down, to and fro, blown by harsh winds. Heavy rains pounded down and large waves slopped over the sides of his boat. Discouraged from not catching any fish, and worn out from fighting his way back to shore, he finally made his way home. Imagine his surprise when he stumbled upon a mermaid with a hurt tail. She was stranded upon shore without a way to return to her home in the sea. Although he was exhausted, he gently and carefully picked her up and carried her to the ocean. As a reward for his kindness, the mermaid led him to buried treasure. And from then on, the fisherman only went out on his boat in fine weather to search for his mermaid friend.
Aren’t mermaids amazing?

Try earning the money to buy it yourself. You’ll appreciate it more when you have to earn it. Lemonade stands, mowing lawns, pulling weeds, collect soda cans, etc. You can do it!
