Looking for some fun mermaid tail games?
Here are our Top Ten fintastic ideas for you:
#1 Mermaids and Seahorses
Divide into two even teams—mermaids and seahorses. Seahorses will form a circle. Each mermaid finds a seahorse partner and stands directly behind her. Assign a caller. If the caller says “seahorse,” then all of the seahorses must swim clockwise behind all of the mermaids and around the circle back to their spot. If the caller says “mermaid,” then all the mermaids must swim like mermaids, with their legs together or wearing their tails, clockwise around and back to their spot. The last mermaid or seahorse to swim back to their spot is out, along with their partner. The remaining pair wins.
#2 Mermaid Treasure Hunt
This great party game for the pool can be adapted for all ages and abilities. For advanced mermaids, scatter fun trinkets at the deep end and let them scoop up as much treasure as they can in one dive. Trinkets can be colorful necklaces, diving sticks, or miscellaneous dollar store items. For younger mermaids, scatter a few items in the shallow end by their feet. Can they hold their breath long enough to bend down and pick them up? Adjust the game according to each swimmer’s ability. Adult supervision is always recommended.
#3 Watch Out for Sharks!
Divide into teams of sharks and mermaids. Match each mermaid with a dive ring the same color as her tail. Then throw the dive rings in at random. When the adult says go, each mermaid will retrieve her dive stick from the bottom. But watch out for sharks! The sharks can stop you! Sharks can move the rings, block the mermaids’ diving attempts and even pull the rings off their arms. The first mermaid to find her ring, make it through shark-infested water, and return to “home base,” wins.
#4 Musical Islands
This pool party version of musical chairs uses inflatable rings as islands. You will need one fewer island than players for each round. As the music plays, mermaids should cruise all around the pool. When the music stops, mermaids need to swim to the closest island and put on the ring to claim it. The player who doesn’t get an island is out. The game continues until the last island is claimed and that mermaid is the winner.
#5 Mermaid Races
Form two lines of even teams for a relay hula hoop race. Ask an adult to stand in the middle of the pool while holding a hula hoop out on both sides. Players swim through the hoops, do a somersault to flip around, and swim back through the hoop to tag the next player. The first team to all swim through the hoops wins. If guests have a mermaid tail, have them race in their tails. If not, then depending on the level of skill, party guests can either swim or use water noodles or kick boards to move across the pool and through the hoops. Mix up the level of swimmers to make the teams as even as possible.
#6 Mermaid’s Magic Moves
Have one player be the judge. All of the mermaids will take turns using their best techniques and tricks to impress the judge. Mermaids can swim through hula hoops, upside down, twirling, somersaults or whatever to perform her most magic move. The judge will pick a winner and the winner judges the next round.
#7 Poor Unfortunate Souls
If your pool has a large shallow end and few party guests can swim, then this is the game for you! Have your portable music player playing “Poor Unfortunate Souls” in this version of reverse musical chairs. Pass around a large beach ball. When the music stops, the mermaid holding the ball is out and scoots to the edge of the pool. The last one left wins.
#8 Sharks and Mermaids
To start, a “shark” stands in the middle of the pool. Mermaids start at one end of the pool. When the shark yells, “mermaids!” all of the mermaids must swim to the other side before being tagged by the shark. Every mermaid that is tagged becomes a shark. All of the sharks then work together to tag all of the mermaids. The game continues until only one mermaid is left. That player wins and begins the next game as the shark. To make the game more challenging, have mermaids jump or dive into the pool, swim to the other side, and exit the water before being tagged by the shark.
#9 Mermaid Dive
With different colors of diving sticks, you can hold various diving competitions. Mermaids can dive individually with a prize awarded for the fastest time. Or the goal may be how many they can retrieve with one breath. Mermaids can also dive together to collect assigned colors and the first one finished, wins.
#10 Miss Mermaid America
Choose one announcer. The other swimmers are “contestants.” Hold a mermaid fashion show where you swim the runway. Rely on your imagination to make it as elaborate and creative as you want. You can have a talent and trick competition, a fastest swimmer competition, and even ask an on-stage mermaid question.
